Last weekend, I watched Spirited Away: Live on Stage, and honestly, it was one of the best performances I have ever seen. The show, which is currently running in Seoul at the Seoul Arts Center, takes the famous animation film and turns it into a real life theatre experience that feels almost unreal.

The original Spirited Away, directed by Hayao Miyazaki, is already known as one of the most iconic animated films ever. It tells the story of a girl named Chihiro who enters a mysterious world of spirits and has to find a way to save her parents and return home. What makes the stage version so interesting is how it takes such a detailed and magical animated world and somehow recreates it live in front of the audience.

The performance is part of an international tour that opened in Seoul earlier this year and runs from January to March 2026. Even before it opened, tickets were already selling out quickly, showing how popular the show is.

What stood out the most to me was the stage design and effects. Instead of relying on digital screens, the show uses physical sets, puppets, and creative lighting to bring the spirit world to life. Many reviews describe the production as visually stunning and full of detailed puppetry and choreography, and I completely agree. There are moments where characters like No Face and the bathhouse spirits appear on stage, and it honestly feels like you are watching the movie happen in real life.

Another thing I really liked was how emotional the performance felt. Even though it is a fantasy story, it still focuses on Chihiro growing up and learning to be brave. Some critics describe it as a “coming of age” story, and you can really feel that throughout the show. The music, originally composed by Joe Hisaishi, also adds a lot to the atmosphere and makes certain scenes even more powerful.

Overall, the stage version of Spirited Away does not just copy the movie. It creates a new experience that feels immersive, like stepping directly into the story. As someone who watched it in person, I can say it was definitely worth it. Whether you are already a fan of the film or seeing the story for the first time, this performance is something you should not miss.
