Gun Violence

During the transition of 2025 to 2026, not only cheerful events like Christmas and new years happened. Multiple tragic incidents happened about gun shooting around the world off warzones, and the victims were not armed and trained soldiers but civilians who never even saw a firearm up close. These stories brought the topic of gun violence a close and relevant topic for us.
There are some cases that especially stand out: the infamous shooting near Brown University, a mass killing at Australia, and a late 2025 family gathering in California. Each cases has its own grief carried, however, they all show social, political and economic pressure can cause.
Near Brown University, a shooting involving young people happened in academic spaces. Students used to worry about grades and internships like we do, but now their priority of concern changed. Their questions are now about whether it would be safe to walk home, whether the campus security will protect them, and other questions related to protecting themselves. The brown university shooting case shows that when a firearm becomes accessible, anyone that shows desperate signs can take actions.
The fact that Australia had a mass shooting incident is sad to hear, as the government already has multiple precausers to prevent firearms from being accessible to the country. The fact that gun violence happened even through strict regulation also shocked not only the country but the world. The Bondi Case showed that while regulation can greatly reduce risk, it cannot fully eliminate it.
These cases, when viewed at one, shows that the rise of gun violence is not only about an individual's bad choices but about whether the environment someone lives in encourages someone to take such actions. To address this, multiple community groups have already taken action, for example, local governments and universities considered tightening the security measures to reduce such tragedies. The transitions from 2025 to 2026 showed that gun violence is not a distant story about soldiers being injured but a case where neighbors get injured and being in fear, questioning globally about their countries policy about firearms.
