GIS 2024 Club Friday

Friday Club
At GIS Secondary, every Friday is a club day, allowing students to explore their interests and join activities that can encourage them. There are sports, music, and academic clubs, as well as protective organizations. GIS allows students to choose any club they want and try it out. Last year, there were basketball clubs, SSTO, and Farewell, etc., that students could enjoy. These clubs are not just for entertainment but also for gathering and uniting the community in one group. Moreover, they encourage students to focus on other subjects. They also help others by donating, having a lot of events, and making the audience more familiar with those incidents.
Basketball club
Basketball is a popular team sport that helps with encouragement and health. Last year, Alex Ku founded a basketball club. The main goal of the club was not only to encourage students to stay active and energetic but also to help them improve their communication and teamwork skills.
By having regular practices and competing, members of the basketball club were able to raise their skills, build strong friendships, and develop good teamwork. The club also participated in matches against other schools, such as MIKA, giving students the chance to experience real competition and represent their school with pride.
Actually, the basketball club created a supportive environment where students could release stress, stay healthy, and balance their academic work with physical activity. Alex’s vision was to show that basketball is more than just a sport, but it can also be a way to strengthen both the body and the mind.
SSTO
SSTO stands for Seoul Survivors of the Turtles & Ocean (SSTO). Over the past months, SSTO has been actively involved in a variety of projects, such as selling drinks, snacks, cookies, and other small treats. The purpose of these events was not only to support the protection of turtles and oceans, but also to raise awareness about the importance of marine life. Also, making the campaign more engaging, each cookie and drink came with a small information card that shared interesting facts about sea turtles, their habitats, and the threats they face. Members of SSTO have worked hard to combine fun activities, such as bake sales and eco-friendly challenges, with meaningful messages about sustainability.
Through these efforts, SSTO has not only raised funds for conservation projects but also inspired students and community members to think more carefully about themselves, like reducing single-use plastics, recycling, and supporting organizations that protect marine wildlife.
Farewell, Inequality
A club that promotes equality by contributing to offsetting inequality. They help others by organizing volunteer work or hosting their own events, creating opportunities for people to get to know themselves and show the world about their abilities. They raise money through these activities, as well as through independent fundraising and bazaars. The main groups they support are children, the elderly, and people with disabilities who face difficulties. Members research, write articles, and volunteer in hospitals, children’s centers, soup kitchens, and senior centers. They also participate in events su ch as marathons and festivals. For example, on November 20, 2024, the Korea Rare Disease Foundation hosted a policy discussion titled “Genetic Counseling Services for Families with a History of Developmental Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorders” to address the ultralow birthrate crisis. In addition, the club raises awareness and advocates through activities such as café events, sending Christmas letters and gifts, and working with the Jusarang Babybox Center. By organizing and participating in these events, Farewell, Inequality has made a great impact on our GIS community and has grown into a major club.
