2026 Milano Winter Olympic Figure Skating Single

A few weeks ago the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina featured some exciting figure skating competitions. Held at the Milano Ice Skating Arena, the men’s and women’s singles events. Gathering top figure skaters around the world.

For the non-figure skating fans here are the basic rules of Olympic figure skating:

In Olympic figure skating, athletes compete in two programs: the Short Program (SP) and the Free Skate (FS). The Short Program requires specific elements, while the Free Skate is longer and allows more creativity. Skaters perform jumps, spins, and step sequences to earn points. Each element has a base value, and judges add or subtract points using Grade of Execution (GOE) depending on how well it is performed. Judges also give program component scores that evaluate skating skills, performance, and interpretation of the music.

The podiums the three medalist form men's singles: 1st Mikhail Shaidorov Kazakh 291.58 (SP 92.94/FR 198.64) 2nd Yuma Kagiyama 280.06 (SP 03.07/ FS 176.99) 3rd Shun Sato 274.90 (SP 88.70/ FS 186.20)

The podiums the three medalist form women single: Alyssa Liu USA 1st 226.79 SP 76.59/ FS 150.20) 2nd Sakamoto Kaori Japan 224.90 (SP 77.23/ FS 147.67) 3rd Nakai Ami Japan 219.16 (SP 78.79/ FS 140.5)

As with every Olympic Games, this year’s competition also came with its drama. The biggest issue during the 2026 Winter Olympics surrounded Ilia Malinin. As this year’s Olympic favorite, he was considered one of the strongest candidates for the gold medal. He is known by the title “Quad God,” which he earned because of his incredible jumping ability. Malinin became the first skater in the world to successfully land a quadruple Axel, and he is also the only skater who has completed all six types of quadruple jumps. However, during the Olympic competition he struggled, failing more than half of his planned jumps and ultimately finishing in sixth place.

This result quickly became a major topic among fans. Many people pointed out that this situation has happened repeatedly in recent Olympics, where the pre-Olympic favorite did not win the gold medal.

For example, at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Olympic favorite Yuna Kim finished second after a judging controversy. At the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, Evgenia Medvedeva, another favorite, placed second after competing while dealing with a foot injury. At the 2022 Beijing Olympics, Alexandra Trusova made history by landing five quadruple jumps, but finished second amid debates about artistry. Meanwhile, another favorite, Kamila Valieva, was disqualified after a doping scandal.

Opinions on the figure skating single 2026 Milano winter Olympic varied. With fans showing enthusiastic support for well-known skaters. Athletes such as Alysa Liu, Kaori Sakamoto, Isabeau Levito, Amber Glenn, and Adeliia Petrosian in the women’s field, as well as Ilia Malinin, Junhwan Cha, and Yuma Kagiyama in the men’s field, received especially strong encouragement. However, many others were disappointed at the same time. Compared to the previous seasons athletes overall performance and technical difficulties did not meet expectations. For women singles in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic many athletes jumped Quads however this year no one did therefore points were way lower than compared to previous season. For the men's single artistry and step sequence overall quality appeared less refined than in previous seasons.
