This continues from my previous writing on figure skating, where I explained the basic rules:
In more detail, a skater’s total score is divided into the Technical Element Score (TES) and the Program Component Score (PCS). TES comes from jumps, spins, and *step sequences, each with a base value that is adjusted by Grade of Execution (GOE) depending on how well the element is performed. PCS evaluates the overall performance, including skating skills, presentation, interpretation of the music, and artistry. Mistakes such as under *rotation, wrong *edge, unclean landings, or falls can reduce GOE, causing more difficult elements to score lower than easier ones. Therefore, program composition is very crucial for athletes to perform their best.
*Step Sequences: A series of steps and turns across the ice, such as three turns, mohawks, brackets, rockers, and counters, used to show control, edges, and musical expression.
*Edge: The inside or outside edge of the skate blade used to take off or glide on the ice. Using the correct edge is important, especially for jumps, and a wrong edge can result in deductions.
*Rotation: Rotation refers to how many times a skater turns either in the air during a jump or on the ice during a spin.
Jumps: depending on how many rotation athletes rotate on air it can result a completely different types of jumps which will significantly affect the points.
Spin: Each type of spins have a required number of rotation if athlete rotation is not enough both base value and GOE gets a deduction.
Notable Moments:
Another notable moment to talk about was Illia Malin the “Quad God” 2026 Olympic and World gold medalist. Getting his 3rd consecutive World Championship back to back. At last year's Grandprix he made history by performing 7 Quad jumps including ultra element Quad Axel and this year's World championship he performed 5 Quad jumps on free program (Quad Lutz & Combination) , Quad Flip, Quad Toe Loop, and Quad Salchow) and secured 1st place. However, what drew even more attention than his jumps was his step sequence. Many viewers felt that, despite appearing stiff and lacking complexity, his step sequence received a perfect GOE.This made fans debate arguing that Illia is getting overscored.
There are also notable moments in women's single figure skating Kaori Sakamoto earned her 4th World Championship performing 7 clean triple jumps on free program. As she announced her retirement after the Milano 2026 Winter Olympics people were awestruck by her comeback and placing 1st in the World Championship.
Another notable moment was 2026 Milano Olympic Gold medalist Alyssa Liu’s absences on 2026 WOrld Championship. According to Alyssa Liu she withdrew from the 2026 World Championships due to lack of practice time right after the Olympics and busy schedule. This is what she said during her interview: "There's so many commitments I have and activities that are overlapping with worlds, and also I don't have much time for training”. Despite the disappointments of Alyssa Liu fans. Alyssa Liu is expected to return and continue competing in the next season, making her future performances even more exciting to watch.
