Do you know about Earth Hour?

Every year, on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour takes place all around the world. It is a global event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). During Earth Hour, people turn off the unnecessary lights for one hour. It starts at 8:30 p.m. in their local time. Many countries join the campaign at 8:30 p.m. in their own time zones. This year, it will also be held on March 28 at 8:30 p.m.

Then, how did this begin? Earth Hour first started on March 31, 2007, in Sydney, Australia. About 2.2 million people and over 2,000 companies joined the first event. Since then, more and more people have participated every year, and now many countries take part in Earth Hour. It is known as one of the largest global events in the world.People from cities, towns, and communities all join together. Not only individuals, but also large buildings and famous landmarks turn off their lights for one hour. Many well-known places around the world also take part every year, such as Namsan Tower in Korea and the Eiffel Tower in France.

Then, what is the purpose of Earth Hour? WWF started Earth Hour to help people understand the seriousness of climate change and environmental damage, and to encourage change. The one hour lights off event is a symbol of a global promise to create a future where people and nature live in harmony. It also raises awareness about climate change and encourages people to speak up for a low carbon society. In addition, anyone can join Earth Hour, including citizens, companies, organizations, and institutions who want to protect the Earth.

So, what are the effects of Earth Hour? According to the Ministry of Environment, even if public institutions, apartments, and major landmarks turn off their lights for just 10 minutes, it can save about 41,189 kWh of electricity and reduce 20.3 tons of greenhouse gases. This is equal to the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by 3,077 pine trees, or the same as not using 4,486 cars during commuting. Even though it is only one hour, Earth Hour can create a large impact.

In conclusion, Earth Hour is just one hour of turning off lights, but it can make a big difference. It is one of the largest environmental campaigns in the world, with many famous landmarks and people joining together to protect our planet.
